Gelasios of Caesarea

   Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine (qq.v.) from ca. 367. An adherent to the Council of Nicaea (q.v.), he was ejected from his see (q.v.) during the reign of Valens (q.v.). His Ecclesiastical History is lost, but it seems to have been an important source for the fifth-century continuators of Eusebios of Caesarea (q.v.), e.g., Gelasios of Kyzikos, Sokrates, Sozomenos, Theodoret of Cyrrhus (qq.v.), and Rufinus of Aquileia, all of whom projected back onto the fourth century their own image of what the Constantinian church was like.
